Porter's Camera Store: Week of January 4, 1999Porter's Camera Store, is the site for the Porter's photographic catalog. This site is useful for it's low prices on all items associated with photography, including a specially priced clearout section, frequently asked photo questions, and a contest that will allow you to have your photographs on their site. A good site to visit because Porter's has some great prices on some item. You can also order the hard copy of the catalog from the site. |

Potters.org: Week of January 11, 1999Potters.org is a great site that I stumbled on by looking for something else. It is a no frills site that is devoted to help out potters and other ceramic artists. The main page has two options. The first allows you to find out more about potters.org, including giving you listserve information to get on the Clayart discussion group (which I promptly did). This will send daily email messages regarding pottery and clay from artists and interested people alike. The second option takes you to the archives, where numerous topics regarding pottery and clay are listed. Just click on the subject that interests you and begin to learn from what others have already found out. Sections include books and magazines, materials, techniques, glazes, kilns and firing, for sale, etc. I have just begun to explore this site and it is very exciting! |

Fine Art Museums of San Francisco: Week of January 18, 1999The Fine Art Museums of San Francisco website is one of the most exciting I've come across in awhile. The reason is the technology built into the site that allows the viewer to zoom in on a piece of work. You can search by artist, title, period, etc., and when you find what you want from the gallery's extensive 70,000 + images, you can zoom to your specifications, also to fit your screen size. It is a wonderful way to look at images in a gallery that you may not be able to visit right away. It is the next best thing to being at the gallery itself. Well worth checking out. |

The Ceramics Web: Week of January 25, 1999The Ceramics Web is tied to the Website of January 11, Potters.org . The Ceramics Web comes from San Diego State University, and, specifically, Richard Burkett, the webmaster. The site has databases of glaze recipes, links to other ceramic sites, and other topics that are of interest to ceramic artists. The Web page says that it was the first online resource for ceramic artists. One of the things I like most about the site is the glazing databases, especially since I am currently taking my first glaze class. The database is searchable, so I am excited about learning how to make different kinds of glazes. The site also offers some great links, including some to online ceramic magazines, and you can add your own URL to the database. A great site for the ceramics artist. |
ArtSource: Week of Febuary 1, 1999The ArtSource website is a site devoted to gathering networked resources on Art and Architecture. The content is diverse and includes pointers to resources around the net as well as original materials submitted by librarians, artists, and art historians, etc. I like this site because it is selective, not including every art site on the web, but those that artists will find useful. Information includes art journals online, image collections, museum information, art organizations, libraries, etc. Of course such a list is subjective, so you must bear that in mind, but it is nice to have this as a resource to aid in web searches and browses. |
Pottery Making Illustrated: Week of Febuary 22, 1999The Pottery Making Illustrated website exists for potters, but also has helpful information for anyone working with clay. The site is basically the magazine online. It includes things such as feature articles, recipes, books, and links to other pottery sites. I give the site a marginal thumbs up, because there is useful information on the page, but the site basically serves as an advertisement for Pottery Making Illustrated magazine. Since the magazine is only published quarterly, the site is a bit disappointing, but there is enough there to recommend that you check it out. If nothing else, you will learn about the magazine, which is a great resource. |
Mining Company Glaze Page: Week of March 1, 1999The Mining Company Glaze Page is a great site that highlights glaze recipes. I highlighted the Mining Company in the November, 1998, Website of the Week, but at that time, I had not stumbled upon the glaze section. This site allows you to look for recipes for raku, earthenware, stoneware, egyptian paste, and earthenware glazes, as well as containing a very helpful cone/temperature chart among other things. It is a very useful site for ceramic artists. |
Glaze Recipes from the Dys-Functional Potter: Week of March 15, 1999Glaze Recipes from the Dys-Functional Potter is another good site to find glaze recipes for potters or tile artisans. One of the things I liked about this site was that there photographs of some of the finished pieces to allow the viewer to see how the glaze would look. It is an interesting site, well worth checking out if you are interested in glazing. |
The Art Mecca: Week of March 29, 1999The Art Mecca is an interesting site if you are an artist, or if you are just interested in art. It houses an interesting collection of artists, and allows other artists to submit photographs for submission to their site. When you sign onto the site, you will be treated to an ongoing slide show of selected works from the gallery. They allow the submission of 18 photographs to be judged and put on the site for $9.95 a month. They also request a photo and artist statement to accompany they work. They also have an interesting section called the "Bad Art Museum". "Gallery of Bad Art" on the Internet. An interesting site and concept. |
The Art of Monica Van der Weer: Week of April 26, 1999The Art of Monica Van der Weer is a site that showcases another artist who does artwork of animals. Van der Weer is a Canadian artist, and I think she has some nice work. I thought it would be nice to show what kinds of things others are doing with similar themes. Check it out. |
Contemporary Artists' Services: Week of May 3, 1999Sylvia White's Contemporary Artists' Services website is dedicated to finding artists to represent. Sylvia and her staff serve as consultants to artists throughout the country. I haven't used her service, but I do know that she has a few articles on her site that can be helpful to artists. Examples are "art advice" articles on photographing your artwork, tips on gallery interviews and studio visits, and more. Worth checking out. |
MisterArt: Week of May 10, 1999MisterArt advertises itself at the world's largest online discount art supply store. I have yet to try them out, but the prices seem to be good. For example, today I went to a local art supply store and bought a ready made canvas for $15. Later in the day, I saw the same canvas on this site for less than $9. Check it out and let me know how it worked. |
Art Institute of Chicago: Week of May 17, 1999The Art Institute of Chicago site is one of the better and more organized museums sites you will find. The collections section houses African-American Art, Asian, American, European, Photography, and more. Also included are looks at current, past, and future exhibitions. |
Stampmaker: Week of May 24, 1999Rubber Stamps Unlimited Inc. is a site that not only sells rubber stamps, it also allows you to create your rubber stamp online. The prices aren't too bad either, and they say that you can create your stamp online and they will ship it out the next day. Worth checking out if you are looking for a stamp for your business. |
ARTtalk: Week of May 31, 1999ARTtalk is a monthly eight-page newsletter available free from participating art material retailers. All you have to do is sign up via email. Each monthly issue includes informative articles that deal with a variety of subjects such as painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, arts and crafts, and more. These explain various techniques--how to work and paint with watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels and more. Subjects vary and change each month. It is an interesting site for anyone who has any kind of art interest. |
UCR California Museum of Photography: Week of June 7, 1999The University of California R California Museum of Photography site is dedicated to photography and imagery. The site has interesting exhibitions and collections from different photographers. For example, the last day I visited they had several stereographs on the site as part of an exhibition, which was fascinating. They hold 100,000 sterographs in the museum. A good site to check out. |
Andy's Art Attack: Week of June 14, 1999Andy's Art Attack is a site well worth visiting for several reasons. Andy's is a place to find information, resources, and files for a variety of web applications. I have used it because they do a great job with their html, web, and photoshop tips. Andy's also offers free images, such as gif animations, backgrounds, counters, buttons, etc. Check it out if you are doing your own site. |
Modern Postcard: Week of June 21, 1999The Modern Postcard site is a place to order postcards of some of your artwork, or of anything that you want. You can use the cards as business cards, as advertisement, to promote shows, etc. Their prices start at $95 for 500 copies and they offer two basic card sizes: the standard 4 1/4" x 6" card and the 6" x 8 1/2" card, although other card sizes are also available. |
Alta Vista for Translations: Week of June 28, 1999The Alta Vista site has something unique to offer. Have you ever come across a website that you think you might be interested in, but it is written in a foreign language? If you've spent any time looking up different artists on the web, then you know what I mean. If the language is French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, or Italian, Alta Vista can help. Not only will it provide a translation of the page, but it will also translate any text from those languages that you cut and paste into their "Connections" box. This is really cool! |
Guild.com: Week of July 19, 1999Guild.com is an interesting site. I found out about it after receiving something in the mail from them. They advertise themselves as the world's largest online collection of contemporary art and fine craft. They have almost 3500 works on display, and the site is juried. There is some interesting work on there, and the site is nicely presented and easy to navigate. If you are interested in applying to have your work displayed, click on the "Contact us" section and there is a section showing "artists@guild.com to receive information how to appear on GUILD.com". This will bring up a form for you to fill out. After the form is completed, a message comes up that says a representative will be in contact with you. Even if you don't get on the site, it is interesting to view other artist's work. Sometimes it gets tedious going to individual artists web sites; here, guild.com, houses a large collection that would take quite a while to get through. It is indexed, and a search engine is provided to help viewers find their interests. |
